Description

A hand-coloured lithograph on yellow-tinted laid paper with blue edging. A vignette of a young couple embracing beside an open window, the gentleman's white horse seen outside and a bridge over a river in the background to the left. The title below: DEVOTED LOVE and a printed verse: " 'Tis not the evanescent flame / That kindles at a Ball or masque / That the first word of blame can quench / 'Tis not such love as this I ask ...". The verse is bordered by the stems and flowers of wild honeysuckle, with WILD HONEYSUCKLE printed below the verse on a ribbon at lower centre. Emblems of Cupid - a flaming torch and cloud - at lower right. The inside pages are blank. From a series. P.14346-R-60 is another example of this design printed onto blue-tinted paper with red edges. See also: P.14346-R-58; P.14346-R-59; P.14346-R-60 and P.14346-R-61. An example from the same series printed on yellow-tinted paper is held at the Museum of London, see 34.170/936. It has been dated, 1860-1880.
