Description

Loose inside album P.14346-R between nos. 26 and 27. A rebus valentine, lithographed and hand-coloured on pink laid paper. The paper has been cut down or cut from its backing paper along the left edge. The upper, lower and right edges of the paper are scalloped. The rebus has been translated as follows: "Dear / At thy feet I / propose to speak sweet words of Love / my heart is only thine believe I / cannot Love thee less, but while / I live I am thine and / thine only; Dearest accept / my hand and heart and let / me prove, how constant eye / can be to Love and thee; / Yours unalterably". The rebus was apparently affixed into the album at some point, as there are adhesions of the brown album leaf paper on the verso. The same rebus valentine, but printed on white paper and with a decorative border, was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 10 February 1995, lot 89 (illustrated as colour plate 89 between pp. 18 and 19 of the catalogue). The Christie's object is watermarked, 'Super 64'. Another similar rebus valentine in the collection of Nancy Rosin is printed by James Wood, Edinburgh, London, etc., and dated c.1862.
