Description

Loose inside the back fly-leaf of album P.14348-R. A lithograph on a leaf of cream wove paper showing a scene of ladies armed with bows firing arrows at men. Cupid sits on the branch of a tree above. A letterpress title is printed below: 'BATTLE OF ST. VALENTINE. -GRAND CHARGE OF LADIES IN LEAP YEAR.' The image is by Randolph Caldecott, whose initials 'R C', are drawn into the image at lower left. The print was probably made after an outline drawing in pen and ink by Caldecott and may have been published in the magazine, _London Society_, to which Caldecott is known to have contributed in 1872. See Simon Houfe, _The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists_, p. 254. See also the reproduction of an outline drawing in pen and ink by Caldecott on a valentine theme, 'Cupid in Society' on p. 255. A second set of initials: "L S D" is seen on a letter on the ground at lower right. On the verso is a page number, '143' and title: 'A Lay of Feb. 14, 1872 / I. - The Grand Charge of Ladies', with verse in letterpress below: 'Of old the Amazonian maids / With glittering spear and targe, / On slaughter bent, their foes disprent / By famed Hydaspis' marge: ...'.
