Description

A postcard-style valentine with double border in gold and blossoming tree with yellow and blue butterflies against a pink background. A verse titled "VALENTINE" is inset within a gold border at centre right: "When first my eyes did view and mark / Thy beauty fair for to behold, / And when my ears 'gan first to hark / The pleasant words that thou me told, / I would as then I had been free / From ears to hear and eyes to see / WILLIAM HUNNIS.". MARCUS WARD & CO. printed at lower left. ENT. STA. HALL printed at lower right. The design is probably by Walter Crane. This card, along with at least one other similar card featuring blossom and butterflies held in the collection of The Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts (with chromo cut-outs of cupids pasted over the verses), indicates that the design was from a series.
