Description

A 'raised' valentine on embossed, non-coated paper with shaped edges and a silvered lace-paper frame at the centre, mounted on paper springs. A chromolithograph of trees in a meadow is inserted inside the frame and a chromolithographed embossed scrap of a peasant couple (German?) is pasted onto the background. Moss is applied to the foreground below the feet of the couple. A pink and white fabric flower with wax stamen and fabric leaves is applied to the frame at lower centre. An embossed chromolithographed scrap of a white dove is affixed to the frame at upper centre. A verse is printed in letterpress on the right-hand inside page: "The Violet / The little violet in our path, / May give us days of sorrow, / 'Tis such a fondness memory hath, / Of youthful years to borrow...". Inscription in graphite on the verso: "2/-" [2 shillings].
