Description

Small 48mo-size card of embossed paper with shaped edges tinted dark pink. Embossed, chromolithographed scraps affixed at centre and upper centre: A woman leading a man with a stag's head, viewed from behind. (The horns indicating that the man is a cuckold); a bouquet of flowers with the motto: CONSTANCY. Embossed stamps at upper and lower centre: LONDON / SULMAN. The inside pages are blank. On the verso, inscriptions in graphite: ' '_The [Hans? or Horns?]_' / scarce type'; '2' at top left corner. This information is transcribed onto the leaf of album P.14412-R, where this card was originally mounted. From a series of comic cards by Sulman and originally affixed to the same leaf in album P.14412-R with four others. See P.14412-R-96, P.14412-R-97, P.14412-R-99 and also P.14370-R. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 78.
