Description

Small 48mo-size card of embossed paper with shaped edges tinted dark pink. Embossed, chromolithographed scraps affixed at centre and upper centre: A man as cello, playing himself with a bow held in his right hand and reading music held in his left; a bouquet of flowers with the motto: SWEET. Embossed stamps at upper and lower centre: LONDON / SULMAN. The inside pages are blank. On the verso is an inscription in graphite: "2" at top right corner. From a series of comic cards by Sulman and originally affixed to the same leaf in album P.14412-R with four others. See P.14412-R-96, P.14412-R-97, P.14412-R-99 and also P.14359-R. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 77.
