Description

White lace-paper with a cut-out of five paper candles hung together by their wicks and a message in blue and red ink written above and below: "May the Candle of our love / never want snuffing. / A Trifle towards Housekeeping". The candles lift up to reveal a message: " "Store's / no Sore." Embossed at lower centre: DOBBS KIDD & CO. The inside pages are blank. An inscription written in black ink on the verso: "Nellie Hodgson [over graphite in a different hand - see same hand and same name inscribed on verso of P.14424-R] / February 14th 1876". Watermark: [J WHA]TMAN / [18]71. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 60.
