A Love Tale Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
White lace-paper (front and back sheet) with an albumen print of a white porcelain figure group on the subject of the sailor's farewell; couple in 18th-century dress seated beneath a tree, the male figure wearing a cocked hat and preparing to leave. The print has been cut out and mounted onto an oval-shaped blind of purple silk at the centre and the title painted in white gouache below: "A Love Tale". A cut-paper fern frond is affixed at lower centre. An oval-shaped design of flowers is painted onto the inside, right-hand sheet. DOBBS embossed at lower centre of the back sheet. On the verso is an inscription in graphite: "1860 / 7/6" [7 shillings and sixpence]. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 66.
