Description

Comic valentine. A hand-coloured woodcut on very thin wove paper. The hand-colouring is crudely executed. A male figure with threadbare clothes (his bottom is exposed) is busy coiffuring his hair with brushes and pots of grease and other products. A printed verse below: "Proud and pompous ignorant fellow, / Your skull is empty of brain, / You think you can count by the hundred, / The hearts you have conquered and slain. / But you're wrong, for every man who has deceit / From me must beat a quick retreat." The inside pages are blank. From a series of comic figures. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 70.
