Valentine card
Publisher: Meek, George
Silver lace-paper with shaped edges with applied fabric flowers (violets) and leaves at the centre and white glittered fabric leaves below. A gilded cut-out cornucopia with motto: MODESTY at upper centre. MEEK embossed at upper centre (viewed from verso). This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 54. The catalogue entry states that P.14397-R is 'from a group of eight valentines sent in 1859-62 by Dr. Glaisher's sister to her school friend Florence Wilson who gave them to Dr Glaisher with other Valentines in 1925'. The other cards from the group are pasted into album P.14344-R and identified by envelopes addressed to Wilson and an inscription written onto the album leaf below cards P.14344-R-22 and P.14344-R-23 by Catherine Parsons, who mounted and arranged Glaisher's valentines collection from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond. See notes. This valentine was one of 12 included in the exhibition about J.W.L. Glaisher as collector, _James Whitbread Lee Glaisher ScD, FRS (1848-1928) Mathematician and Collector_, held in the Octagon Gallery at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1999, Case 9. The selection repeated that of the 1995 exhibition.
