Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Etching with hand-colouring on one sheet of white wove paper. Central image within an oval etched frame of a lady wearing regency dress and straw bonnet in a garden, holding a red rose in her right hand and surprised by Cupid hiding in a rose bush who fires an arrow at her. Faint pencil copy of the 'nymph' at upper right (presumably as drawing practice?). Etched verse (numbered stanzes) around the central image: "Fairest nymph beware of roses, / It is where young love reposes, / Pluck a flower and to your heart, / He will send a potent dart. ...". Graphite inscriptions at upper left corner and upper centre: "1822 / rare"; "4 for 30/-" [30 shillings]. Watermark: J WHATMAN /1822. From a series. See also, P.14410-R-36, P.14410-R-40 and P.14410-R-42. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 8. A graphite number "8" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
