Description

Etching and hand-colouring on one sheet of white wove paper. A scene in a field where a woman is stealing a quiver of arrows from a sleeping Cupid. An etched decoration above of a quiver of arrows and bow entwined with roses and a butterfly. Etched verse above and below the central image: "Nay pause my dear, reflect awhile, / Ere you love's arrows steal, / Whilst you retain that dang'rous smile / Nor those bright eyes conceal ...". This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 5. A graphite number "5" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
