Description

Hand-coloured lithograph of a large heart containing a house with a bride worshipping at the altar of Hymen to the left and a church to the right. The title, "To be Let - / With immediate Possession" printed below followed by a verse: "I have a little heart to let, / Depicted just above; / The Fixtures are unvarying truth, / The Rent is - Constant Love ...". The paper has previously been folded into quarters and is addressed in black ink on the verso: "Mr Kemp / 9 Bedford Row / Holborn". Remains of red sealing wax and partial postmark: "[...] FE 14 [18?2]4". This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 15. A graphite number "15" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue. According to the catalogue, 'a woodcut version of the same design was used in 1820'. (Hartley, 1995, p. 6)
