Description

Lithography printed in sepia with hand-colouring on cream wove paper. A border of flower garlands and bows around the central image and a hand-painted edge of light blue. At the centre, a gentleman stands in a garden holding a valentine card in his right hand, within a heart-shaped 'frame' of flowers and birds. A vignette of Cupid and Hymen with a heart "TO LET" at upper centre. A printed verse at lower left and right: "How few Pleasures we enjoy ...". The paper has previously been folded into quarters for posting. A notice "Pay next time" is inscribed on the outer fold. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 14. A graphite number "14" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
