Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
An 8vo-size hand coloured lithograph on white wove paper with an embossed border (as lace). A central scene shows two couples on a path outside a Norman church. The male figure of the foreground couple gestures towards the door of the church which lifts open to reveal a couple being married at the altar. A verse is printed below: 'Within the sacred aisle, my love, / With thee I fain would be - / In pure affections smile, my love, / Still plighting constancy ...'. The front is adhered to the back at upper right. The interior is blank. The small square of paper printed with the hand coloured lithographic scene at the altar is pasted to the verso of the front. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 16. A graphite number "16" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue. P.14415-R-L3 is a very similar hand coloured lithograph with an opening door, which carries a watermark date of 1843.
