Description

White lace-paper with hand-drawn scalloped inner border in blue ink with central white satin panel within a collaged frame of silvered cut-paper garlands arranged in the shape of a heart. A cut-paper, hand-coloured fairy on a silk cloud at the centre of the panel. A verse hand-written in blue ink above and below: "May flowerets of Love, / Around thee, be twined. ...". At lower centre, a motto in red ink on a lace-paper scroll: "Love." [?MAN]SELL embossed at lower centre. Watermark: [....] D/ [..]52". The card has previously been folded lengthways twice. The inside pages are blank. The card is mounted onto a larger sheet of white wove paper. This valentine is very similar in style to another in the collection which is watermarked 1852. See P.14384-R. Another similar Mansell card is P.14342-R-79. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 41. A graphite number "41" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
