Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Etching and hand-colouring on one sheet of thin, white wove paper. An etched roundel contains an outdoor scene of a woman wearing white regency dress and gloves and raising her arm to dispatch Cupid and his doves with a letter. A shrine surmounted with a pair of hearts stands to the left. Printed verse above and below the central image: "Fly Cupid, fly, extend your wing. / Hasten and his answer bring: ...". Watermark: J WHATMAN / 1821. A graphite inscription at upper right: "1821". A graphite inscription on the album leaf: "W M 1821". This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 3. A graphite number "3" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
