Cupid tying the Knot Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
4to-size card of cream laid paper with gilded embossed border and inner lace-paper border (same as seen in P.14410-R-9 and P.14410-R-10). Unusual landscape orientation (position of maker's stamps show that the paper has been turned upside down). A collage of cut-paper and hand-coloured flowers and fruit with silvered leaves and cut-paper Cupid/Hymen enacting a mock marriage ceremony at an altar with flaming hearts. Embossed: DOBBS (outer border) and DOBBS KIDD & CO / LONDON (inner border). Title handwritten at upper centre in blue ink: "Cupid tying the Knot". Verse hand-written in blue ink at upper left and right: "Unity of hearts bringeth forth bliss, / And sheds a halo of celestial peace." Watermark: J WHATMAN/ [?1846]. The inside pages are blank. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 30. A graphite number "30" is written onto the album leaf in the lower left-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
