Valentine card
Printmaker: Hopwood, James II
Hand-coloured etching and engraving on 4to-size cream wove paper, inscribed at lower left: "J Hopwood del". A lady wearing regency dress and red turban with white plume draws onto the trunk of a tree. A gentleman hides behind a tree stump to the right. A small Cupid standing in the foreground to the left aims his arrow at the gentleman. The hand-colouring is unsophisticated. A verse engraved below: "Unconscious that the Youth is near, / She carves the Name she holds most dear, / And Urchin Cupid, takes his dart, / And wings it to the Lovers [sic] heart." An inscription in graphite at upper left: "32".
