Description

Heart-shaped card with silvered embossed lace-paper front sheet of a flower garland design with a collage of blue silk leaves and silver tinsel flower affixed at lower centre. A scrap with printed verse in silver affixed at upper centre: "The flowers that / spring around / Are not so sweet / to me, / Tho' they with beau / ty deck the ground / They'll not compare / with thee." A window at the centre contains a chromolithographed posy of flowers mounted onto the back sheet bordered with a frame of silvered and embossed cut-paper leaves and one hand-coloured cut-paper pink rose. Initials inscribed in ink below: C. ?R. The front sheet adhered to the back sheet at the left side. Almost identical to another card, P.14411-R-45, mounted onto the same album leaf. Both cards use the same silvered embossed design, but with different scraps and collage elements. Similar heart-shaped cards in the Laura Seddon collection at Manchester Metropolitan University are dated 1850-60. See Volume 8, nos 9 and 10.
