Description

A small sheet of white laid paper with a printed address on one side: 10A, EAST STREET, / BRIGHTON. Handwritten inscription in blue ink on the verso: "6 at 4/ each". Watermark: Prince of Wales feathers / [PRINCE]'S COURT. The Brighton address is for the antique dealer, Walter Acton, from whom Glaisher bought china and valentines. The firm was run by Walter Acton until 1910 and then by his daughters. The Actons sent Glaisher valentines on approval and the price written on the verso almost certainly relates to a bundle of valentines that were received by Glaisher from Walter Acton, although which particular ones it would be impossible to identify with any certainty. There are other affixed and loose sheets of headed notepaper from the Actons of Brighton in the same album, bearing similar inscriptions and prices, which indicate that they were supplying Glaisher with valentines. See P.14411-R-49 and P.14411-R-L3.
