Description

Heart-shaped embossed and gilded paper (single sheet) with central window and blind of white silk mounted with a collage of silk leaves, fabric flowers, cut-paper leaves and flowers with hand-painted additions and metallic ornaments of dove with letter, crescent moon and cornucopia. A printed scroll at upper right bears the verse: 'Believe my love / For you sincere / and to my heart / Yourself most dear'. 'BURKE' embossed at lower right. See also P.14342-R-54, which indicates that this heart-shaped collage by T.H. Burke was cut from the centre of a larger sheet of paper which was originally the front-paper of a quarto valentine. However, the double stamping of the larger sheet and the heart-shaped centre seen on P.14342-R-54 suggests that the heart collage was designed to be more versatile.
