Description

Small 48mo-size playing-card-style comic valentine with imported chromolithographed figure incorporating opening flaps. The single piece of card has a gilt embossed border with scalloped edges and lithographed lilac ground with scroll design. An older male figure holds a flower bouquet, a potted plant and a framed picture. Two out of three of the flaps have been stuck down, however, and only the third can be opened to reveal an image of a couple embracing. The figure is also adhered to the card support, but would have originally lifted to reveal a printed motto on the chromolithographed scrap visible beneath. The contents of the other flaps can be seen from duplicate cards, P.14412-R-81 and P.14412-R-84. From a series and one of eight examples of playing-card style comic valentines employing imported chromolithographed figure scraps with opening flaps that are mounted onto the same album leaf. A handwritten inscription in graphite on the album leaf: "Original price 4d each". The hand has been identified as that of Glaisher's friend, the local Antiquarian, Catherine Parsons, who assembled and arranged Glaisher's valentine albums in 1924. See letters from J.W.L. Glaisher to Miss Catherine Parsons in the Fitzwilliam Museum Archive.
