Description

Comic valentine. Hand-coloured lithograph on white wove paper. A pastoral scene within an oval frame of a young boy and girl, a circular temple in the background to the left and a cupid flying above them. The title printed above: 'DAMON AND PHILLIS / BEFORE & AFTER'. The title refers to a poem by John Cunningham (1729-1773). Printed below: 'Dedicated to ................'. The recipient's name intended to be added. Inside the card on the right-hand page is a further hand-coloured lithograph of a domestic scene, an older woman doing laundry, an older man holding a baby. A lithographed verse on the inside left-hand page: 'Blythly skip the pretty dears / The future hath for them no fears / They like the lambs content remain / and dream it will be e'er the same / Nor wake they to the stern reality / Until they see the sad fatality.'. One of a series of comic valentines of the same design. See also P.14412-R-110, which is affixed to the same leaf of the album. A graphite inscription on the album leaf: 1/6 [1 shilling, sixpence] may relate to an inscription found on the verso of P.14412-R-109.
