Description

Comic valentine. Hand-coloured lithograph on white wove paper. A central vignette of a red-riding hood figure standing beside a tree reading a card/paper (presumably a valentine card). A church spire can be seen in the distance on the right. The title printed above: 'THE GAME OF MATRIMONY / AS GENERALLY PLAYED'. Printed below: 'Dedicated to ................'. The recipient's name intended to be added. Inside the card on the right-hand page is a further hand-coloured lithograph of a hand holding five playing cards, the central card featuring an image of two hearts pierced with an arrow, the two to either side featuring pictures of babies. A lithographed verse on the inside left-hand page: 'The pretty game of / Matrimony is played / by two persons, sometimes / they turn up trumps, / otherwise they shuffle / and deal with each other / as best they can. Four / is the highest card & shows a good hand.'. One of a series of comic valentines of the same design. See also P.14412-R-109, which is affixed to the same leaf of the album. A graphite inscription on the album leaf: 1/6 [1 shilling, sixpence] may relate to an inscription found on the verso of P.14412-R-110.
