Bowl. Hard-paste porcelain painted in blue, green, iron-red, yellow, aubergine and black enamels of bright, clear tone and gilt. The bowl has steep, fluted sides and an everted, foliate rim, deep foot and flat, recessed base. The exterior is decorated with eight panels enclosing sprays of peony, prunus, chrysanthemum, birds and insects. The interior is decorated with a central medallion showing chrysanthemum and peony and a butterfly, and the sides with four branches of flowering prunus beneath a ruji head and double-lined border.
History note: Possibly from Sotheby's, April 1923, for £12.5s.0d; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
