The Love I Prize Valentine card
Publisher: J.T. Wood & Co
A 'raised' valentine composed of three layers; White coated embossed lace-paper with silvered detail cut into a trefoil shape window containing an embossed chromolithographed scrap of a flower bouquet entwined around an anchor, the back of which is affixed with a paper spring. The paper is further embellished with a collage of fabric leaves and flowers at lower centre and small blue and yellow fabric flowers at upper left and right. It is mounted with paper springs to a second layer of cameo-embossed lace paper with a lilac ground, which is affixed with paper springs to a third layer of plain embossed paper. A verse is printed in letterpress on the inside right-hand page: 'The Love I Prize / 'Tis not the lily brow I prize, / Nor roseate cheeks, nor sunny / eyes - … that look which love alone can see.'. Embossed on the second layer of paper at lower centre: 'WOOD'. Watermark: 'ANNA […] ALE / PO […]W'. Hand-written inscription in graphite on the album leaf: '2/6' [2 shillings sixpence]. Presumably relates to an inscription found on the verso of the card.
