Description

A 'raised' valentine composed of two layers; white lace-paper with central oval window, mounted with an oval-shaped collage of white fabric leaves, a white satin ribbon bow at upper centre, scraps of flowers and leaves at centre left and right and at lower centre a gilt-edged lithographed motto (as hand-painted entwined leaves and flowers): 'LOVE'. The white lace-paper is mounted with paper springs to a layer of embossed white paper with tinted purple edge and a large chromolithograph of lilies (in sepia, orange and green inks) at the centre. 'MULLORD BROTHERS' stamped at lower centre (viewed from verso). Inside, a lengthy hand-written verse in black ink on pink lined paper addressed to 'Daisy', evidently composed by the sender, who appears to be an older gentleman, possibly a father or uncle: 'To Daisy / A poet's muse usurps his heart, / His mind uplifts, his brain it fires; / So maiden fair, pray blame me not / I speak but as my muse inspires ....'.
