Description

Cream lace-paper with a central panel mounted with a collage of cut-paper blue and pink flowers and leaves and cut-paper hand-coloured birds with lithographed and hand-coloured nest. Stems and tendrils are drawn in red ink and additional tendrils and leaves are stencilled in green paint. A hand-written motto at lower centre: 'Faithful to thee alone'. 'KERSHAW' is stamped at lower centre. Pasted onto the album leaf below is a clipping from a sale catalogue: '587 / Another (Georgian), perhaps slightly earlier, perforated embossed border ... 7s 6d ...'. This valentine was one of several bought in 1924 from the bookseller, R.S. Frampton who was based at "Walton House", 37 Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park, London, N4. The bookseller's catalogue (No. 36), with a number of lot descriptions cut from it, was found in boxes containing Glaisher's valentines. See Valentinesarchive15. 'Kershaw' is written in graphite onto the album leaf below P.14414-R-5, almost certainly in Catherine Parsons' hand. Miss Catherine Parsons was a close friend of Glaisher towards the end of his life and undertook to arrange and mount his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond.
