Description

White lace-paper with pink tissue slip paper pasted to the right-hand inside page. At the centre, the title is lithographed (as hand-written) in blue ink at upper centre: 'Short Reckonings / make / Long Friends'. Below is a collage of hand-coloured, embossed and cut-paper flowers with areas that can be lifted to reveal additional lithographed inscriptions in blue ink: 'And so I / send you my love / with a kiss'; 'present payment'; 'no abatement'. 'DOBBS & CO' is stamped at lower left. A hand-written inscription in black ink on the verso: '1863'. This inscribed date suggests a later date for this card than is indicated by the maker's stamp, as Dobbs & Co. had become Dobbs, Kidd & Co. by 1851. It is possible, however, that the card could have been bought in by a stationer but sold at a later date. 'Dobbs' is written in graphite on the album leaf below. This is the same hand that is seen in other albums throughout the collection (e.g. P.14344-R and P.14346-R), which does not belong to Glaisher and has been identified as belonging to Miss Catherine Parsons. Miss Catherine Parsons was a close friend of Glaisher towards the end of his life and undertook to arrange and mount his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond. See letters from Glaisher to Parsons in the Fitzwilliam Museum archive.
