Description

Large 4to-size valentine with wide cameo-embossed border (as lace) with green ground and inner embossed 'lace' frame at the centre which surrounds a collage of coloured cut-paper leaves with lithographed and hand-coloured cut-paper poppy flower and additional stencilled leaves. A hand-written verse in black ink is written around the central embossed frame: 'Oh! quickly loved one name the day / When I may call you mine / And we to church will haste away / My charming Valentine'. The interior is blank. One of six similar cards contained in album P.14414-R, two of which are watermarked with the date 1846. P.14414-R-17 and P.14414-R-18 are mounted into the album. P.14414-R-L4, P.14414-R-L5, P.14414-R-L6 and P.14414-R-L7 were found loose inside the same leaf of the album.
