Description

White lace-paper incorporating a design of coral, seashells and starfish. A central oval panel is mounted with a collage of lithographed and brightly hand-coloured paper birds positioned on white rice-paper lily flowers. Scraps of lace-paper leaf stems are arranged around them. A chromolithographed scrap of a flower basket and motto: 'AFFECTIONS OFFERING', is affixed at lower centre. 'DOBBS KIDD & CO' is stamped onto the interior of a shell at lower left. A graphite inscription on the album leaf below the valentine documents the maker's name: 'Dobbs Kidd & Co'. The hand is recognisable as that of Miss Catherine Parsons and is seen in other albums throughout the collection, documenting and transcribing inscriptions, prices and maker's names. Catherine Parsons was a close friend of Glaisher towards the end of his life and undertook to arrange and mount his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond. A name is inscribed in graphite on the inside right-hand page, seen from the recto, but unable to be deciphered. The front paper is adhered to the back paper.
