Description

A small white lace-paper front mounted directly onto the album leaf. A lithographed title in blue ink at upper centre: 'Gatherings for my best beloved!' At lower centre is a collage of cut-paper, hand-coloured flowers and leaves with stencilled leaf and flower additions in gouache. The left and right sections of the collage can be lifted up to reveal hand-written inscriptions: 'I live in Hope' and 'I love but thee'. Affixed at upper centre is a basket ornament of embossed silver paper containing more cut-paper hand-coloured flowers and leaves with stencilled additions. 'DOBBS' is stamped at lower centre. A hand-written graphite inscription at upper left: 'U/C'. Other cards in album P.14414-R are inscribed with similar markings in graphite. The design of this card is very similar to another card by Henry Dobbs, which is no. 32 in the same album. 'Dobbs' also written in graphite onto the album leaf below the card. The hand is recognisable as that of Miss Catherine Parsons and is seen in other albums throughout the collection, documenting and transcribing inscriptions, prices and maker's names. Catherine Parsons was a close friend of Glaisher towards the end of his life and undertook to arrange and mount his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond.
