Description

White lace-paper with central oval window backed with blue wove paper. The central panel and lower portion of the lace-paper are mounted with a very neat collage of cut-paper lithographed birds with nest and eggs nestling on fabric leaves and cut-paper and hand-coloured flowers and leaves with real grasses in the background behind the birds. A title is painted in white gouache onto the blue paper at upper centre: 'Rural / Lovers'. The front paper is adhered to the back paper. An inscription on the lower right corner of the inside right-hand page can be seen through the lace-paper, but is indecipherable. This is almost certainly a Henry Dobbs card, probably as Dobbs, Kidd & Co., (circa 1851-circa 1870). The location of the collage and pasting together of the front and back papers means that a maker's stamp is not visible. An example of this card design is reproduced in Ruth Webb Lee, _A History of Valentines_ (B.T. Batsford Ltd., London, 1953), plate 138, p. 168, where the maker is identifed as Dobbs, Kidd & Co.
