Description

A valentine comprising a lace-paper panel with embossed scraps inside a printed card folder with two 'doors' which are opened with pink, silk tasselled cords. The doors are printed in pink, brown and gold inks featuring geometric designs including stripes, trefoils and scrolls with a roundel on each 'door' containing Cupid with his bow. The printed design is continued in the interior and the verso of each door features framed verses, left: 'WILT THOU WELCOME THIS FOND MISSIVE / FRAUGHT WITH MANY A HONEYED PHRASE? ...' and right: 'ACCEPT IT LOVE FROM ONE WHO PRAYS / THAT FORTUNE ALWAYS SMILE ON THEE ...'. A single piece of ornate cream lace-paper is mounted onto the central panel of the folder with paper springs. A central oval panel is affixed with an embossed scrap of a putti carrying pink roses and forget-me-nots. Two embossed scraps of rose garlands of the same design are affixed with gold tinsel flower ornaments at upper and lower centre. Further gold tinsel flower ornaments are affixed at the four corners of the lace-paper and to the verso of each door. The design of this card is similar to those produced by Marcus Ward & Co. in the 1860s.
