Description

White wove paper with a lace-paper border. A collage of embossed silver paper bell ornaments and cut-paper ivy leaves arranged at the centre. A lithographed title in blue ink at upper centre: 'Belfry / Whispers of a Wedding'. Lithographed verse in blue ink printed below each silver bell: From upper left to lower right: 'O I must tune my sweetest air; Yes for such a goodly pair; / The Birds will sing their choicest lay; To greet them on life's flowery / way; / When dear Pal shall I begin? Immediately he's placed the / Ring; / Joyful be our peal that day; And for their happiness we'll / pray'. A lithographed and hand-coloured cut-paper robin is affixed at lower centre with 'speech' lithographed in red ink above it: 'Hush! they'll soon be here'. The front paper is adhered to the back paper. Although the paper is unstamped, this valentine is comparable in style to those produced by Henry Dobbs (as Dobbs, Kidd & Co.) during the 1860s.
