Description

White cameo-embossed lace-paper with a scene of palm trees, Greek temple and seated man with a woman in greek drapery and dog in the left foreground. An oval window at the centre has a blind of pink silk which is decorated with a garland of cut-paper and hand-coloured leaves and flowers. Remnants of adhesive at the centre indicate that there has been a loss. A cut-paper and lithographed shield is affixed at lower centre bearing the motto: 'Sweet kisses love I / send to thee'. On the verso is an inscription written in black ink by the sender: 'With love and affection wishing / you many many happy returns / of the day / Alice Livinger / 6 Albert Square / February 14th 1856'. The phrase 'many happy returns of the day' is most likely used here merely as a salutation to mark Valentine's Day rather than as a birthday greeting. Prior to the mid-19th century, the phrase was used at any celebratory or festive event. The date, '1856' is repeated in a graphite inscription written onto the album leaf below the card. The hand (unknown) is recognisable as that which is seen in other albums throughout the collection, and which reliably documents inscriptions, prices and maker's names. The front paper is adhered to the back paper.
