Description

A lithograph in black ink on a single sheet of white wove paper. An uncoloured version of the design seen in P.14346-R-40. A male reclining figure sits on a leaf at upper left, a winged Cupid beside him. These figures are joined by stems and leaves to a reclining female figure with a lute who sits inside a rose flower at lower centre. The design encloses printed verse: 'On a bank reclining / Sick at heart repining, / Lone and sad I lay; …". A more advanced version of this design is P.14346-R-40, which includes added lithographic colour; green leaves, red tights for the male figure and brown for hair and lute. Although unsigned, this design can be identified as by British lithographer, Edward Gilks. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836 and 1843 or between 1844 and 1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London. P.14414-R-104 is one of a number of designs for valentines by Gilks which are mounted together as a group in album P.14414-R. Other designs by Gilks are contained in album P.14346-R.
