Description

A hand-coloured lithograph on white wove paper cut into a small rectangle and mounted onto a larger sheet of cream laid paper. A female figure wearing Ottoman-style theatrical costume of yellow turban and green robe. The lithograph is signed at lower right: 'E. Gilks lith.'. A verse in brown ink is written onto the secondary support below: 'Strangest that one lightly whisper'd tone / is far, far sweeter unto me / than all the sounds that kiss the earth / or breathe along the sea. ...'. '30' written in brown ink at upper right corner of the secondary support. This is one of three designs for valentines by Gilks mounted onto the same page of album P.14414-R which feature small lithographs of women in theatrical costume that are cut down and pasted onto paper with either hand-written or lithographed verse below. This design was probably produced between 1847 and 1852, as this seems a likely date for P.14414-R-122, a similar design mounted on the same leaf of the album. Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852.
