Description

Loose inside album P.14415-R, on the first leaf. A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-sized white wove paper with an embossed lace border. The design is in the style of an illuminated manuscript with two roundels and a larger scene encircled by entwining vines with flowers, leaves and a peacock. Cupid with his quiver sleeping beside a candle decorated with a pair of hearts appears in the roundel at lower left. At centre right, two putti carry a tasselled banner bearing the symbol of a heart crossed with an arrow and torch. A swan-necked boat is rowed along at centre left and a church steeple rises above clouds at the right. A lithographed verse is printed below: 'Encircled in thy clasping arms / How have the raptured moments flown! / How have I wished for fortunes charms / For they dear sake, and thine alone ...'. A watermark: 'W&J Harris / Turkey Mill / 1843'. P.14415-R-L1 is one of a series of hand-coloured lithographs that were produced in this style. P.14414-R-L8 is a duplicate. See also P.14346-R-12 and P.14346-R-14, which appear to be from the same series and are both similarly watermarked with the date, 1843.
