Description

A hand-coloured etching on a small rectangle of heavy paper which has been cut down on all sides but most visibly along the bottom edge around the printed title: 'When shall we two make a dipthong? / when U and I are United.! / Pub March 19 [the '9' overwrites what is probably a 0] 1844 [the first '4' overwrites a '2'] by Humphrey 24 St James's Street'. George Humphrey (the Younger) was based at 24 St. James's Street between 1824 and 1831. It would appear to be the case that the publication date on the plate has been altered from 'March 10 1824' to 'March 19 1844'. An outdoor scene of a couple walking a dog in the countryside. The female figure wears a pink dress trimmed with white fur and carrying a large white fur muff. The gentleman gestures with his right arm towards the Church spire seen in the distance on the right. The spaniel dog runs ahead of the couple carrying a green umbrella in its mouth.
