Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-size thin, white wove paper. A young man sitting on a rock beside a stream gives a small, sealed letter to a grey dove which hovers on the left. A church is visible in the distance. A verse is printed below: 'Go, little dove, and my passion declare, / To the best of the sea, so lovely and fair, / The rose of bower ne'er looked so gay, / Tell her I love her by night and by day ...'. The interior is blank. One of eight examples from the same series which are mounted together, consecutively in album P.14416-R. The lithographic style of all eight reproduces a loose and fluid pastel drawing. This card is one of six listed as a group in a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R. See P.14416-R-L1. The group is bracketed together and priced as 'the six for £1.1/0'. The other cards in the group of six are: P.14416-R-4, P.14416-R-6, P.14416-R-8, P.14416-R-9, P.14416-R-10. The remaining two cards in the larger group of eight are listed separately in the Frampton MS, bracketed together and priced at '2 for 7/0'. See P.14416-R-5 and P.14416-R-11.
