Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-size thin, white wove paper. A young woman wearing a yellow dress sits on rocks beside a stream and holds a sealed letter in her left hand. A top-hatted gentleman watches from behind a tree. A verse is printed below: 'So young so innocent and fair / no single flower can e'er compare / With thee, my little timid maid, / Content to bloom in modest shade; ... and every sweet less sweet must be / Than thou, my Valentine, to me!'. The interior is blank. One of eight examples from the same series which are mounted together, consecutively in album P.14416-R. The lithographic style of all eight reproduces a loose and fluid pastel drawing. This card is listed along with P.14416-R-5 in a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), the two bracketed together and priced as '2 for 7/0'. The remaining six are listed as a separate group in the Frampton MS and priced at £1.1/0 for the six. See P.14416-R-4, P.14416-R-6, P.14416-R-7, P.14416-R-8, P.14416-R-9, P.14416-R-10.
