Valentine card
Publisher: Strong, Thomas W.
A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-size, very thin white wove paper. An ornate, oval-shaped baroque-style strapwork/scrollwork border printed in blue ink with entwining vine with grapes, leaves, flowers featuring Cupid and Hebe. A heart pierced with an arrow at lower centre. Within the border is a lithograph printed in black ink with some hand colouring of a gentleman wearing a top hat and holding a cane in his left hand. A mountainous landscape setting behind him with a cottage to the left. A verse is printed below: 'Then hear me lovely fellow say / What rapture would one smile convey; / Oh grant my prayer dear youth incline / And answer this Loves [sic] Valentine'. The interior is blank. One of four examples from the same series with blue lithographed ornate borders which are mounted together, consecutively in album P.14416-R. See also P.14416-R-12, P.14416-R-13 and P.14416-15. This card is listed along with P.14416-R-13 in a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), the two bracketed together and priced as 'the 2 for 7/0'.
