Description

A lithograph in black ink with hand colouring in red, green, yellow, brown and blue paint on 4to-size very thin, white wove paper and surrounded by a circular lithographed border of flowers printed in blue ink. At the centre of the border is a Scottish solider wearing a bearskin and a tartan kilt. He holds a sword in his right hand. A battle encampment can be seen behind him in the distance. A number printed within the illustration at lower right: '28', indicates that this valentine is one of a series. A verse is printed below: 'Lo the banners display'd and the toops are array'd / And they march to the sweet breathing lute / Then with you sir I'll join like a bold Valentine / Be my Captain I'll be your recuit.'. The interior is blank. One of four valentines from the same series, all with lithographed flower garland borders in blue ink, mounted together in album P.14416-R. A hand-written inscription in graphite on the album leaf below P.14416-R-17 was probably transcribed from a hand-written MS by second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found loose on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1). The MS lists P.14416-R-17, P.14416-R-18 and P.14416-R-20 as a group of three and brackets them together with the price 'the three for 10/6'. P.14416-R-19 is a fourth example from the same series mounted beside the others, which Glaisher either already owned or bought at a later date.
