Description

A lithograph in black ink with hand colouring in red, green, yellow, brown and blue paint on 4to-size very thin, white wove paper and surrounded by a circular lithographed border of leaves, roses, putti, flaming hearts, Cupid's quiver and bow and Hymen's flaming torch printed in blue ink. At the centre of the border is a young woman wearing a yellow skirt and standing in an interior before a green curtain. A number printed within the illustration at lower right: '17', indicates that this valentine is one of a series. A verse is printed below: 'Tho small the pledge yet may it be / Remembrance of my love to thee / And may thy love delight my breast / Possessing all of thee possest'. The interior is blank. The front is adhered to the back at upper and lower right corners. One of six valentines from the same series, all with the same printed border, and mounted consecutively in album P.14416-R. P.14416-R-27 is listed in a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), bracketed together with the 5 other cards from the same series and priced as 'the six for £1.4/6 [£1, 4 shillings and sixpence]'. The other 5 cards in the group are: P.14416-R-22, P.14416-R-23, P.14416-R-24, P.14416-R-25 and P.14416-R-26.
