Description

Comic valentine relating to the occupation of coal mining. 4to-size thin, white wove paper with a hand-coloured lithograph of a pitman who stands beside a pit railway with a pick-axe over his right shoulder and a shovel in his left hand. The figure wears a blue jacket and blue cap with a red feather in it. A verse is printed below: 'Fair maiden can you love poor me? / A canny Pitman, as you see; / With face so black and outside rough / My heart is made of the right stuff; / And if but to church you will ride / And be a swarthy Pitman's bride / While waters flow in Tees on Tyne / I'll seek no other valentine'. The interior is blank. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '3/6 [3 shillings and sixpence]'. This presumably records a price from the verso which was visible prior to mounting.
