Description

A tinted wood cut printed in blue ink on thin, white, 4to-size wove paper. A broad, ornate, lace-design wood cut border containing a tinted wood cut printed in blue ink with hand colouring of a female figure sitting in an interior reading a letter/valentine, a harp on the table to the left. A letterpress verse is printed below: 'Affection prompts, then why refrain / To join in Hymen's flowery wreath? / Within our hearts love will remain, / Till forced to yield to conquering Death.'. The interior is blank. One of eight valentines with the same tinted wood cut design mounted together as a group in album P.14416-R. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below P.14416-R-41: '6 /= a pair [6 shillings for a pair]', indicates that all eight were bought by Glaisher for 24 shillings or £1 and 4 shillings.
