Description

A lithograph with hand colouring on 8vo-size white wove paper. A hand-coloured lithographed border of stylised leaves, vines and flowers surrounds a central hand-coloured vignette of a couple standing in parkland beside a stone archway guarded by Hymen who holds a flaming torch. The top-hatted gentleman gestures towards the archway with his right hand. A large house is seen in the background on the far right. 'No 17' is lithographed at the lower right of the image, indicating that this design is one of a series. A verse is printed below in sloping script: 'Useless the Diamond in Golgondas [sic] Mine, / Unless drawn forth among the fair to shine; / Just such is love within the human breast, / It glows and sparkles to mkae mortals blest; / See Hymen points to his alluring shrine, / Be thou my guide, and my sweet Valentine'. The interior is blank. One of a series of similar designs in the same style which are mounted on consecutive leaves of album P.14416-R. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below P.14416-R-51, '8 for £1-4-0' probably relates to that found on the handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1) where P.14416-R-51 is listed and bracketed with 7 other similar valentines from album P.14416-R, including P.14416-R-52, and which are priced at '8 for £1-4-0'. In addition to P.14416-R-51 and P.14416-R-52 the others listed are: P.14416-R-53, P.14416-R-54, P.14416-R-56, P.14416-R-58, P.14416-R-59 and P.14416-R-60. Four further valentines from this group are also found on the Frampton list, bracketed together and priced at 10 shillings for the four. See P.14416-R-55, P.14416-R-57, P.14416-R-61 and P.14416-R-62.
